i don't know... maybe sit down? ;D good song (commercial as hell!) but I just dont understand why people immediately associate james with sit down. there was a lot of people that went to james concerts just to ear sit down and shout ''SIT DOWN'' during the ballads... how annoying...

>but I must confess I love them both; I find they transmit a certain upbeat vibe despite their themes.<
You've hit the nail on the head there. I always find it difficult to articulate why I love James so much; when people ask me what's so special about them, I always struggle for words to express it. But you said it perfectly above: that is one thing that makes them so special to me. It's funny, although they have songs with serious, and sometimes sad, themes, I never get depressed from listening to them. Sometimes sad, but not in a bad, sort of self-pitying way. Some other bands have sad songs that I sometimes want to listen to when I'm down, but they make me feel worse, not better. But I never get that feeling with James-- they always make me feel better about things.
As for "Low Low Low," personally I love that song. It, like "Laid," is clever and quirky and funny with incisive lyrics and an irresistible beat. I think "Laid" is quite possibly a perfect pop song from start to finish-- talk about energy. Witty, funny, up tempo, quirky, a subject most people can relate to, unforgettable, and timeless. I never get tired of hearing it; to me, it's as fresh and endearing as the first time I heard it over 10 years ago. A truly great song that does what is so rarely done: successful as an immediately likeable pop song but also high enough quality to have lasting appeal.

But I never get that feeling with James-- they always make me feel better about things. That presents an interesting dilemma. For instance, the only reason I try to get my friends into James is because their music has done me so much good, helped me better understand certain aspects of life because the songs are so fresh and organic. So it always strikes me as odd that no one else in my immediate circle seems to understand or appreciate them the way I do. In certain circumstances, knowing that someone else has felt the way I do to the point of being compelled to write a song about it really brings me some comfort -- even when I'm feeling down. What I would give to be able to share that gift, these songs, with people I care about. But it's in one ear, out the other; it baffles me. So, I'm the same, James never make me feel down. But I must confess, I don't really have any other musical interests that bring me down either. I can listen to anything when I'm in a happy mood, but sometimes I fear that listening to depressing music in good times is a jinx of sorts; and yes I realize that's ridiculous. But similarly, listening to happy music when I'm feeling low only seems to taunt me. That's when I crave depressing songs, knowing that what I'm feeling is human, not a deadend road I'm travelling. Off-topic: I just re-read the post you quoted and somehow there's a smiley in the middle of it. Strange...

James? Overrated?

I don't think Sit Down is overrated really, it's one of the few singles to get the success it deserved. It's difficult to think of much that was overrated in the media. Millionaires as a whole got some overly-kind reviews. Stuart Maconies 'career-defining' comments hardly seem appropriate for the album.
If there were an underrated songs topic, that'd go on for quite a while.

I don't think Sit Down is overrated really, it's one of the few singles to get the success it deserved. A suggestion slightly deflated by three released versions. The second one was tighter (similar to what they did with "Waltzing Along"), but it lost a bit of the charm. The 1998 version was deplorable.

Well it succeeded twice.

done underrated songs so thought I would rant about some overrated (in my opinion) songs. First off, Born Of Frustration. I dislike the song intensely, not even sure why! Its also one of the few James songs that I dont even like live. [snip] I know what im here for. Great lyrics but just seems too much like an attempt for a big hit single for my liking. Shes A Star. Tim looks hot in the video. Thats its only redeeming quality. I dont think its a bad song, just sounds as if it could have been done by any band. Doesnt feel like a James song. Finally, I think as an album Seven is vastly overrated. I dont agree with the simple minds critique but i do think its their worst album ( I know I said ages ago that ptmy was the worst album, but its grew on me! ;D) So, overrated songs and/or albums? *runs off and cries* I love every minute of Seven, and BOF is the bestest song everest!! Also lurve Star and IKWIHF. Not sure what is the most overrated though ... not been in discussion with enough James fans yet to decide. I'm not in any fit state to comment as I'm still in euphoria after the now not so new news!

A perfect example that fans occasionally encourage bad music through regrettable purchases. Far as that goes, I feel I got my money's worth in the GLR session of "What For". But we all do this; another shame I bear is having bought the most recent R.E.M. and U2 albums.
