The "bad studio, good live songs" thread got me thinking about this topic: are there any James songs that you wish you'd heard live, but never did? Personally, I always wanted to hear them do "Stolen Horses" live, but they never did do a live version of that song.

Bearing in mind my slightly limited base to work from, I'd go for Sound Investment or Make It Alright.

Wish I had your limitations! "Make It Alright"-- good choice. Always loved that song. There are also some BATBA songs I wish I could hear live versions of: especially "Hands In the Rain," which I love. Maybe Tim will play some of them on his solo tour.

Great topic
I would have to go with the other b-side that was on the IKWIHF single and say Downstairs. I absolutely love that song and think it would be great live. I'd say that I was disappointed that it didn't make b-sides ultra, but who cares if I already have it from the single?

Since I deplorably never got to see them perform, I'll try and respond as if I had known they existed before 2002. "Your Story" is a brilliant song and I don't know how frequently they performed it (if at all) but I guarantee it never got the exposure it deserves.

Finally, someone else who loves "Your Story", that's by far one of my favorite B-sides and I think it was worthy of making it onto Whiplash, maybe even being a single in its own right. I was definitely surprised it didn't make it onto B-sides Ultra. Other songs I would have liked to have heard or seen live are: Billy's Shirts (I could really imagine this getting the crowd going), Sky is Falling, Chunney Chops, All One to Me, and Afro Lover... although of course, the band said the latter is impossible to play live.

You imagine rightly: there's a kickin' version of "Billy's Shirts" on Salford '86. The crowd really gets into it, singing along enthusiastically with Tim's booming vocals. It's great!!
Two other songs I'd have loved to hear live are "Building A Charge" and "Fire Away." Two of many great James B-sides that should have made onto an album somewhere. I know they never did a live version of the latter; not sure about "Fire Away." What a great song: I can just imagine them really getting the crowd fired up (no pun intended) with that song. Another one of those James songs that I just can't sit still for when I hear it!

I love the lyric "pilgrim twin" and all the knight imagery.

I would have loved to have heard "Play Dead" live. That song is a sonic masterpiece.

"Play Dead"-- absolutely, I second that: excellent choice. I love that song. No one ever mentions it, so I'm glad to see there are others who like it as well.
Steen, there are recordings of "Five-O" live. (I know it's not the same as seeing them play it in concert, but at least they have played it live before and recordings exist).

thanks -yes- I have heard it live many times on bootleg --and love it... I was refering to actually see it and hear it in concert--somehow James decided not to come even close to Copenhagen after the Seven tour, and when I finally caught them a few times in London, Manchester Porto--it was too late for five-0 Play Dead -- there are the famous recording where Tim booth dedicate it to our famous host Dave Brown and his date

I've seen James play Five-O live, but it was a disappointment. They did it both times I saw them on the Lollapalooza tour, but both times they left out the whole middle of the song. IIRC, they left out this part:
Will we grow together Will it be a lie If it lasts forever, hope I'm the first to die Will you marry me Can we meet the cost Is the power of love worth the pain of loss Can you pay the bill, will you keep the change Are you here for the party, or are you here for the play
It was that part and/or the whole instrumental part right after that, which is really integral to the song because that's where it really builds. I was bummed, but still glad they at least played the song!
Steen, what is this "famous recording" of Play Dead you speak of?

its a not too good recoding of Play dead with a intro where Tim talks a lot about dave and how he is in love bringing his girlfriend with him. I call it famous because they only playd Play Dead a few times live, and ofcourse you will remember this becuase of the dedication to dave--Maybe someone will be able to help you and others get a mp3 version of this. Its not on my computer right now, and I don't know exactly where it is--so I can't tell the- year, venue but if noone else can help I might find it ...... somewhere

Do you know where I could find a bootleg copy of that gig? I can't find any on jamestheband.no-ip.org:8080/ I would pay to hear that!
