Personally, I like Why because of the gorgeous harmonised vocals, very folk indeed. I like Fire too, but it's a totally different song, no where near as solemn.

Why So Close is a much more focused and interesting track in my opinion. No contest... (although there is actually a contest...:S...!)
I actually think the track is unlike anything else I've heard from James.

Why So Close has always been a real favourite of mine. I think James sound great accoustically as it brings an additional fragility and sensitivity to the songs.
I've never heard them play it live unfortunately, you never know though....

Why so close for me. Strongest track on Stutter + stands up superbly well now and was the forerunner to best songs on Laid

I saw them play one after the other a couple of times around 1987. Was brilliant and typical of James at the time.

I do have to get up and wiggle to Fire!
Dave - funny you say that, was imagining the "acoustic" beginning to Waltzing Along being long and building and building until the Best Of version cut through big and loud ...

bust out that accordion and do a jig - woo hoo- fire so close
Why so Close is profound while Fire so Close is more 'matter of fact.'

I remember trying to tab out Why So Close and getting immensely bored.
Fire So Close is much more interesting.
