The biggest cock-up of the night followed, when no one knew how to start Ring The Bells. At one point Saul started to play Tomorrow, but mostly they just looked around, fairly puzzled. Saul decided the band's over rehearsal was to blame - "maybe we should only have done one rehearsal... instead of three" That's a little harsh, It was hardly a 'cock-up' and it certainly wasn't the 'biggest' of the night either. Yeah there were more than a couple of mistakes, but surely that was to be expected? It was the first time they played together for many years. Bells and Tomorrow share the same chord progression - listening to it back Saul played the right song, he just came in a little early (unless he was just warming up ) - and his comment about the rehearsals was at the end of Destiny (song 2) not Bells. anyway that's only nitpicking - THEY PLAYED IF THINGS WERE PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweezely loved the review but for me your best line was the one about the psycho on the tube...wearing your face as a hat...I can barely breathe for laughing typing this!!! Seriously, the guy had NO EYEBROWS. His head was entirely devoid of hair. "Don't look at him. No, don't look at him!" I kept thinking, but eventually he got off, presumably to go to his north London flat to sleep on a bed of human flesh. Also: UnkArl. Er, I'm sorry?

It was a totally amazing gig, took my sister who dislikes James and in her words 'Tom that was an amazing experience'. Probably a once in a lifetime setlist and they sounded for the most part like the songs had been really well rehearsed, the best songs for me have to be Stripmining, Five-O (I was gobsmaked by how this song took me somewhere else and much prefer the more subtle backing vocals and Larry's solo OMG) Who are You (Great riff and ending) and Ring The Bells (none of the horrid plinky plinky keyboard intro - played how it should be played.
The audience were slightly subdued til Sometimes and Say Something but the band looked really happy and the rapport and body language between them was wonderful plus their was good banter between the crowd Tim and Saul - I liked Tim telling us Eno was costing Coldplay 10 grand a day!
Would have liked a couple more new songs but that's being picky, it was wonderful being so close to the band and an the intimate venue, I'll treasure for the rest of my life, its taken me about a week to realise what i have witnessed think ive been in shock since last Friday!

Here's my Live Journal post/review of Hoxton.. It's a bit on the late side, but had no t'internet access for a couple of weeks. And anyway, better late than never! J x vinyl-junkie-1.livejournal.com/33179.htmlJames at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen Friday 16th March Being my day off, I hadn’t been online when One Of The Three sent out the email to oneofthethree.com message-boarders on Thursday, so I was horrified when I checked the site and board at work on Friday to see the news of a “Secret fans only" gig at a small venue somewhere in Hoxton that very night! I then spent most of the rest of the day frantically posting on the message-board and emailing others in the hope I might be able to somehow get a ticket. Not that I held out much hope… BUT my new found friend (goldmother) Kirsty came up trumps! As she was coming down from Nottingham at short notice (leaving hubby and 2 small kids behind!) and hadn’t been able to persuade anyone to join her so had a spare ticket! I couldn’t believe my luck!! I then hastily began planning my evening and journey to meet her in Aldgate before heading to the venue. Neither of us could quite believe it when we got to the venue and saw how tiny it was! It was essentially the back room of the bar and snugly fitted the 250 capacity inside. The band came on bang on time at 8:30. They were SO CLOSE!!!! It was good to see them again and great to see Larry back on lead guitar duties too! Not that I’m knocking Adrian Oxaal, as what he did during his time in the band was good, but you in my opinion you can’t beat Larry for sheer skill and talent. It was good to see the “Laid Six” (as they are being called) on stage, while also feeling a bit surreal too! I don’t think anyone could quite believe what they were about to witness… Mark was on keyboards (trying his best to hide as the stage wasn’t really big enough for him to stand at the back), then Larry (in a fetching t-cosy hat), then Tim (also in a t-cosy and his arm in a sling (we later found out this was ‘cos he’d hurt his shoulder and the sling was a vague attempt to stop him from dancing!)), then Saul (who currently has surprisingly “normal” hair and still looks pretty damn cute!), Jim (who STILL doesn’t seem to have aged AT ALL!) and Dave behind the drums. They seemed to be enjoying being back on stage, playing together and genuinely seemed to be getting on with each other again! There was even banter with the crowd and jokes along the way. The fire seemed to be back!!! They played a really interesting and varied set, including album tracks and some really old tracks that I’ve never heard them play live before, none of the really obvious stuff! It was great!! They also treated us to a couple of new songs “Who Are You?” and “Chameleon” I liked them both. Who Are You has a great strong Larry riff and Chameleon was classic James, with chorus you could pick up by third time round… I’m now very, very excited about the tour coming up and all the talk of new albums. James Are Back and I’m SO SO glad I was there to witness the start of their return to glory.
They played:
Seven
Destiny Calling
Who Are You? (new track)
Play Dead (Whiplash)
Fine (Pleased To Meet You)
Stripmining (Strip-Mine)
Really Hard (Stutter)
P.S. (Laid)
Getting Away With It (All Messed Up)
Chameleon (new track)
Say Something
Sometimes
If Things Were Perfect (James II EP)
Protect Me (Seven)
Ring The Bells
Laid
