Just downloaded a live recording of James doing a Smiths track - the one with the lyrics "we hate it when our friends become successful" Someone jog my memory and tell me what its called! Please put me out of my misery.

Um... I think it's called "Our Friends Become Successful and Then We Really Hate Them." No just kidding. I believe the title of the song actually is "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful." But I could be wrong.

it was indeed "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" which according to conspiracy theorists was written about James - references to Tim's shirt and the Sit Down video. James did it because they were called in to replace Morrissey at Glastonbury 92 at the last minute. The original was on Morrissey's solo album "Your Arsenal". The NME commented that "it was nice to hear a Morrissey song sung in tune". Of course, this was before they decided James weren't cool anymore.

Maybe I should start a new thread for this but it seems like it might fit in here, but do any of you actually consider yourselves fans of the Smiths? I know a LOT of people on another message board that adore the Smiths, but personally--and let us limit this to the Smiths songs I've heard thus far--they don't really impress me. I've just heard the odd single or seen the odd video, but nothing enticed me to delve further into the Smiths and from what I've heard, I don't consider the comparisson very complimentary of James.

I once read a quote in Q (could have been the NME) that James were 'the poor mans Smiths'.
Completely disagree. I do like the odd Smiths song but think James blow them out the water in every conceivavble way.

Love them or hate them you've got to admit that The Smiths were ground-breaking-haven't you? Or am I just falling for the hype! Personally I prefer Morrissey on his own. It's not something I listen to alot but when I do It reminds me how good he is lyrically. Did anyone see the channel 4 documentary on him recently? He really is a unique character. Comparing them to James - well you just can't can you.

He is a great lyricist but I a song needs more than great lyrics to be good. Personally I think Morrisseys style more duited to poetry or literature than songs.

I couldn't have said it better myself, thank you! I'm not saying Morrissey isn't a genius in his own right, nor am I suggesting he can't pen lyrics; but something about the Smiths is way too melodramatic for my taste. Over the top, definitely.

I think the footage you've seen is probably clouding your judgement a bit. The devotion they inspired is like nothing I've ever seen before. Their music inspired so many other bands and they wrote about issues such as the Moors Murders and vegetarianism and meant what they were singing at a time when the music industry was about how big a yacht you had, how many supermodels you'd shagged and how much coke you could do in a night. They also insisted on packing their releases with new tracks as well so people were getting real value.

I did actually see the smiths live when I was a lot younger and youre right the devotion they inspired was monumental and yeah, they were an important, groundbreaking band but I agree with Poster Saint that they were too melodramatic.
It seems to me that the bands they did inspire (which I know includes a lot of amazing bands) kept a lot of the good things about the Smiths but toned it down a bit and made it a bit more enjoyable. But then again, music to me is escapism so thats just my point of view. ;D

WHAT... How could you not like the Smiths. I just took it as read that they were adored!!
They were truly asn exceptional band. I think its fair to say that my love of James developed from seeking a replacement for the Smiths.
HMV are selling the CD's for a fiver a piece at the moment..Louder than Bombs is great Value for money, (Or the Queen is Dead,) Heck, buy em all theirs only seven!!
