It is 17 years to the day that the mighty gold mother was first issued. I bought my copy on vinyl from a little record shop in Bishopbriggs where I lived at the time on my way home from school, in preparation for my first james gig the next night. To my surprise, the little record shop, which was still about 70% vinyl in 1990, actually stocked the album.
The original was so much better than the reissue which followed in 1991.
The highlights for me then were god only knows, government walls, and crescendo.
17 years later, my favourites are crescendo, and top of the world.
Gold Mother is a real mixed bag, but still one of my favourite james records.

thats just depressing, 17 years I really dont know where the time went.
It was my first James purchase after hearing and loving Come Home, also purchased on vinyl and was one of my first buys when I got a CD player in 1992. (just before Seven came out) Never usually regard it as one of my favourites now but it always does something new everytime I listen to it. Like you I prefer the original too but the remastered version pretty much hits the spot and tbh is the only version I listen to now.

I was only KIDDING honestjoe07. But if I see a ball in the street I've got to kick it........ if you know what I mean. Anyway Gold Mother. Brilliant. Eclectic, esoteric, clever, funny and thought provoking. But WHERE IS SHE?.................. I hope she's okay.

Been a bit busy of late, and I thought I'd better go cold turkey on my addiction for a bit..... It didn't really work....... I'M BACK!!! ;D

17 years ago? I was still at sixth form and United hadn't won the league for 23 years!! I recall buying Goldmother from the mighty Play In in Eccles. I used to spend ages in that place on a Saturday looking for obscure or old stuff, and then ending up ordering in it when I got some money together.
By this point I was already into James, with quite a few others from school, so it was a must buy album....

Play Inn! It was in Eccles, with a branch in Swinton too. Aww...they sourced me all sorts of records. Vinyl, beautiful records... I was 22 when Goldmother was released. You can call me "mum" if you like, just don't mither me for a Fruit Shoot or some sweets, or else I'll deck you lol

Tab Clear and a marathon please mum!! On a sane note, Play Inn was rather good in that case, Vinyl on the right as you walked in, tapes on the left, and any special vinyl was above the counter.

I remember getting it from Andy's Records in Warrington on cassette! I'd been to see them play the G-Mex (Dec 93 show) and had been listening to Laid virtually non-stop. I'd also dug an old copy of Seven and buying Gold Mother (£6.99 on a special price!) was the next step.
In fact, I seem to recall that it had a special sticker on it in most of the shops I went into saying it was on sale for a low price or was part of some campaign. Not sure if it was a generous ploy by Sire (ha! I know!) or if it was just a ploy by the shops to get shut of it or whether it was due to the whole 'Sit Down being added on' thing.
Must admit it's not really my favourite album, but there are some real classics on there in between some of the more take-it-or-leave-it stuff for me. I remember loving Walking The Ghost and Top Of The World the first time and not being able to get the opening guitar from Government Walls out of my head for ages.
Blimey, is it really 17 years?!

I picked this up when in Manchester for the May tour. First vinyl I've bought, still need a record player though.
