I don't quite know where to post this, but I'm going to share it with everyone as it is quite a useful piece of software to have on your computer...
Ever deleted a photo by mistake that you wish you had kept? Or formatted a memory card and lost photos that you had not made a copy of?
This brief guide will also work for the most common file formats (.mov, .avi, .mp3, .mp4, .wma, .wav etc)
Take a trip to this site
www.pcinspector.de/Sites/smart_recovery/download.htm?language=1#
and click the green 'accept' button to accept the license agreement.
In the window that opens, set the language to whatever you prefer. 'Choose download' should be set to HTTP and click the 'download' button.
Download / Install the program.
If you want to recover images from your digital camera, connect your camera to the computer and switch the camera on, select PC Mode / USB Mode or whatever it offers, just do not select a print option
I'm using my digi cam as the basis for this guide.
You need to know what drive letter (ie C: D: E: etc) has been assigned to your cameras memory card. To find this out, open up 'My Computer' and find the drive that matches your camera. On my computer it appears as 'Removable Disk (L:)', with L being the drive letter.
Run the program you have just installed (Start --> Programs --> PC Inspector Smart Recovery)
When the program has loaded, select 'Update---> Update format list' to give you extra file recovery options (MP3 for example will be added).
The default options will suit most people, however if you have files that are larger than 15mb in size (videos for example), select
File--> Settings and increase the file size to something more suitable.
In the pane named "1. Select Device", set this to your cameras drive letter, in my case I set it to 'L'
In pane "2. Select Format Type", to recover images, set this to '.JPG' and 'Automatic'.
In the 3rd pane, you need to choose somewhere to save all the files. You can set this (by clicking the folder with a magnifying glass) to "My Documents --> My Pictures --> Recovered Photos" or something similar.
Leave the filename set as "CONVAR", with the file type reading "*.*" and click 'Save'
Click the start button and cross your fingers
I shall point out that data recovery can be quite time consuming, especially on slower PC's - my computer progresses about 1% a minute and I consider it to be of a high spec!
Also, do not interrupt the process and do NOT save anything to the memory card. The more files you save to it after files have been lost, the higher the chances of them being over-written.
Any issues using the program I'll do my best to try and answer them. It's the most useful piece of software I have ever found, but if you have deleted something, it cannot always be recovered.
