I bought Pleased To Meet You when it first came out, listened to it once and completely hated it! But I put it on the other week and y'know what? It aint half bad! Its the first time I havent immediately gotten into a James album.
So was wondering Whats the worst James album. My votes on Pleased To Meet You.

Really? I had quite the opposite reaction. I thought PTMY was amazing the first time I heard it. (with the exception of the title track. That song still doesn't sit right with me.) As far as the worst album, I would have to say Millionaires. Not that it's a bad album, it's just not as good as the others. By the way great idea starting this messageboard Dave. ;D

I'm gonna have to argue with you though. I thought PTMY was average, but once you get past the title track, the second half just blows me away now. Millionaires is definitely the worst album. Past track 5 it just dies. Surprise, Vervaceous and SGIIFM are great live, but the recorded versions really don't do it justice.

Really? I take your point that Millionaires isnt really a bad album but its got some great tracks on it. Shooting my mouth off and strangers are both excellent. but then i suppose it all boils down to preference! My friend thinks Gold Mother is awful!

Yeah Millionaires does get weak especially in the middle. And the one time I got to see James live was at Shepard's Bush in 2000 and I remeber SGIIFM just blew me away. Before that I always thought it was a pretty average song (by James standards). And also, listening to the studio version of Vervaceous after listening to GAWI live for a long time was somewhat of a let down.

But dont u think then that by the merit of how great the songs sound live the album shouldnt be considered the worst?

I like both cd's pretty well start to finish - like all James cd's there are one or two tracks that don't click but thats OK. And like all James recordings the live versions are special too but not necessarily better.

I love Millionaires. Well up to track and including track 6. Hello irritates me. Pleased to meet you is great with exception of title track. I don't have a worst album. I have a least listened to. Seven is probably just beating Gold Mother, but that's not to say they aren't good albums. James rock!!!

Have to disagree with you, Dave, about Millionaires being the worst James album. I think Whiplash is much weaker than Millionaires-- which is not to say I don't like it-- heck, I like them all, so I'd be hard pressed to pick a "worst" (or a best, for that matter).
I can't believe that so many people seem to dislike "Pleased To Meet You." It still blows me away every time I hear it. Am I the only person who likes the title track to PTMY?

I have to disagree.
I think Pleased To Meet You is a top tune and a good album, (although I too had difficulty with it at first)
Millionaires is a superb album, I think it's their best.
Whiplash has a few top tunes but is a messy album, the band were in disarray and it shows,
Seven is overblown the band had expanded and had yet to find their new direction, thery obviuosly were aware of this to follow it with the sublime laid, Gold Mother is great, Stripmine an under appreciated classic, Stutter is OK, Wah Wah is a bit of a mess (but meant to be!)
Overall all of the albums have reasons for them to be loved and all contain Classic tunes, but ultimately Whiplash gets the least time on my turntable!!!!!

I agree that whiplash is a messy album but with all the stuff going on inthe aftermath of black thursday what else was to be expexted? Although the album isnt as cohesive and together as other James albums i still think it deserves a better rating cos there are some glimmers of cracking tunes like play dead.
I dont dislike pleased to meet you (and the title track is one of the better songs in my opinion!) but I just find it really boring and tim seems to be singing in falsetto too much for my liking!

"Black Thursday" refers to a dark day in James history (it was in November of 1994) when they simultaneously got several pieces of bad news: Larry Gott announced that he was quitting the band; Tim revealed that he was going off with that Badalamenti fella to record "Booth and the Bad Angel"; and the band got a tremendously nasty shock when they found out that they had an outstanding tax bill to the tune of 250,000GBP. Rather discouraging, to say the least.

So you can understand why Whiplash was a bit messy being written in the aftermath of all that!
