What is your favourite and least favourite James song and why?
I'd go for One Of The Three as best and Hello as the worst.

At the moment:
Best: Five-O
Worst: A tie between Surprise and Confusion.
Hey, Surprise and Confusion should be the name of the next military operation in... Oh wait the war is "over." Never mind.

Best: "I Know What I'm Here For"
Worst: "Skullduggery". I really, REALLY don't care for the lyrics. I might go as far as to say that this is the only James song in which I have a hard time finding redeeming qualities. In fact, if James were once in the business of catering their records to Sire's wishes, I can't fathom why this song would have been considered more appealing than "Stutter", which I have to assume was shamefully dropped from both James's first and sophomore records based on info I've read here and the fact that they named their first LP Stutter.
Incidentally, thank you again Mr. Brown for having posted both the studio version and live takes of "Stutter". James simply have to release this song officially. Not to mention songs like "Once A Friend" that are only available on vinyl. I actually have a "fair" amount of records for collection purposes, but I still don't have a turntable.

Best: Born of Frustration. Or maybe The Shining. Or possibly What For. Maybe Stripmining. Perhaps Ring the Bells.
Worst: Gold Mother. No alternates.

Best: "Sometimes" No words to describe this! Worst: "I know what I'm here for" just wish they hadn't put that pile of crap on this superb album...it's so annoying.

>>Worst: "I know what I'm here for" just wish they hadn't put that pile of crap on this superb album...it's so annoying.<< Aackkk! Surely you jest?! "Annoying"? Only my favorite song on that superb album. God, I love that song! I find it irresistable, with its "exuberant Tim Booth" vocal style. I just can't sit still every time I hear it, and no matter what kind of mood I'm in, it always puts me in a better mood. Oh well, I guess there's no accounting for taste...

Cat-
I was never ever ever a fan of that song until I heard the version off the Accoustic Collection. Dear good God almighty that's a beautiful song. I take it you have heard that version? And anyone who hasn't should download it NOW!
While we are on that subject, I'll feel free to ask if anyone else noticed Tim changing the lyrics to "Don't Know What I'm Here For" for the Wembly 2001 concert? That was fun.
Also, does anyone have the bootleg from the MEN show of that year? I was there and seem to remember Tim saying " 'haning on through late December'... almost sounds like a suicide announcement" or something like that. It obviously wasn't on the cd or dvd, but I seem to remember that pretty clearly.
Speaking of which, I remember reading somewhere that the hanging on through late December lyric was about his planning to quit the band the December after Millionaires (but, of course, he stuck it out.) However, on his main site, Dave says Tim never said what it meant.
Dave?

The bit about Tim thinking of leaving was correct, but it was the Winter 1998 tour, ie before Millionaires, when he was planning to leave (well I suppose because they originally intended to get Millionaires out in about October 1998, it's not strictly true). I've changed the IKWIHF page, I think that was written before he came out and said this.

Geo-
I agree that the acoustic version of that song is amazing which only makes the album version sound that much worse in my opinion!

One of our fellow messageboarders has kindly volunteered to try and clean up a recording of IKWIHF from the Oxford show in June 1998 where Tim claims to have written the lyrics that day. It doesn't have the pronounced keyboard bits and more of the "na na na na" bits. If the clean-up doesn't work I'll post it as it is, but the recording quality is poor.
