Agreed, I wish people would grasp the fact that setlists are determined before they take the stage. That reminds me... one of the earlier '01 festival bootlegs (I think Ireland) was supposed to end with Sit Down but they ended up with time for one more song afterwards. Tim asks to the rest of the band "Bells?..." then hears someone in the cround and says "... or Sound!" To which you hear Saul off-mic say "Bells! Bells-bells-bells." Tim replies "Sorry. Bells." I'm guessing they planned Ring the Bells as the possible extra finisher and they weren't wearing the right intruments to jump into Sound. (Since Saul plays 12-string for Ring the Bells and a 6 string accoustic for Sound). But even the extra add-on songs are pre-decided.

>>But even the extra add-on songs are pre-decided.<<
I think they probably are, but there may be a few songs (older ones) which they know so well that even if not decided beforehand, they might be able to add on at the spur of the moment.
I have an original setlist from Guildford 1999. The first 8 songs follow the setlist exactly, but it changes a bit after that. There was one song played-- We're Going To Miss You-- which was not on the original setlist, and was where Out To Get You was originally listed. The next few songs are all on the list, but the order is slightly different. Then they changed the encore: the original encore was supposed to be Vervacious and Sit Down, but they dropped Vervacious. In the setlist there is a question mark on the side of Vervacious, so I assume it was a song they were considering but hadn't yet decided for sure. The encore they ended up playing was Out To Get You/Sit Down. OTGY was originally #9 on the list, but they ended up substituting it in place of Vervacious in the encore. So all of the songs (except for WGTMY, but this may not have been the final setlist) were decided on before they went on, but the order was different.

Reminds me of the GAWIL DVD. The group meeting about what the hell they could play with Saul's stuff not working. You can see them glancing down at the setlist and trying to figure out a new order. Plus, Larry left the stage but came right back to do Hymn and Johnny Yen. After things were working again, Tim says to Saul "Are you working again? OK lets do getting away with it." I'm guessing that was what they were supposed to play after Out to Get You, when Saul's stuff stopped working. And would also explain why Tim sent off Larry and Larry came right back, once they knew they couldn't play GAWI.
Just a theory.

At some point or another I came across something that indicated that they were going to do English Beefcake in Manchester but dropped it out of the set because of Saul's equipment problems. Thank goodness they got to do Beefcake in Glasgow & then Wembley (with Eno).

I love these types of polls. My favorite James song, by far, is Five-O. It's such a beautiful song and really captures the essence of love in its lyrics. "If it lasts forever, hope I'm the first to die" is extremely loving yet incredibly selfish. IMO, that's the best lyric ever written. The music that accompanies the lyrics is perfect too -- it starts out almost meek and uncertain, kind of like some people are at the beginning of a relationship, and then builds, like love itself, to become extremely powerful and overwhelming. It doesn't get better than this. There isn't one specific James song that is my least favorite, because frankly there are a lot I don't particularly care for, but if I had to choose, I guess I'd say Surprise. It just sounds disjointed to me, and Tim's voice seems off and doesn't mesh well with the music and that backing vocal. It's just sorta icky. Julie in L.A.

Best - Johnny Yen - purely because the the live impromptu version they did on the last dvd just blows me away and makes me dance till I drop every time I hear it.

Best - Johnny Yen - purely because the the live impromptu version they did on the last dvd just blows me away and makes me dance till I drop every time I hear it. That whole mess with the equipment and subsequent comeback was absolutely the defining moment of that show. I love how Saul reacts at the end of "Johnny Yen", and his aggressive staccato notes seem that much more poignant when you consider they might not have been there. Fantastic.

Best song: There's so many but it'd probably be Alaskan Pipeline or Sometimes. But I really can't choose one. And as for worst, there isn't a single James song I've heard that I dislike, so I can't really say.

Simply Impossible to decide my favourite. Crash would rank among the worst, an equally tricky choice

Can only do best - and more than one, v old and less old.... If things were perfect...how I originally got into James. Just like Fred Astaire - a perfect love song.
That's all I can say x
