Hymn from Village smetime around 84 or 8 can't remember quite. Mind it took me longer to get of my butt to go and see them though. Now I see them every chance!

My mate used to listen to James on his walkman all the time, he had Seven playing one day and I asked to listen. The lyrics that I heard were "Dont need a shrink but an exorcist", at the time I was a fan of the movie The Exorcist. ahh those were the days... You used to even call it "The Exorcist Song"

Come Home -first heard coming thru the walls from the students next door EVERY night when I was trying to go to sleep. He only seemed to own that and Step On by the Happy Mondays... Looked a bit like Tim Booth actually Once I found out who/what it was I went and bought a copy of GOld Mother and there started the costly obsession... And singled me out at school by being the only one not into NKOTB/Take That/Whoever and started all the James who? questions lol Wouldn't change it for the world! J x

Despite the best efforts of a friend at school who tried to get me into them at the time of Village Fire etc cos I liked the Smiths I never really got them at that point. James kind of dropped off the radar for me while I listened to the Cure, Mission etc until Come Home came out and changed my life. Hated the whole baggy/rave thing they were associated at the time but still loved the band.

Hymn from a village - in fact that entire EP - stuff I heard when they supported The Smiths in 1985.
I remember flying home from Tunisia after I'd gone off there to find myself (!) and "How was it for you" was on the airplane radio - I just kept waiting for it as the tracks ran on a loop, dancing in my seat when it came on (to the chagrin of the guy next to me, but he was smoking a fucking cigar so hey - I know who got the better deal...!) Loved that track too.
And more and more too many to go on about here. Because that wouldn't be adhering to the thread of the FIRST song to get me into them!

Boringly, it was Sit Down. Less boringly, it was about the same time as the Best Of came out, which was a weird time to first listen to that song, especially as the remix was played a lot more. I vaguely remembered the track, but I didn't listen to music really in '91. I was only seven.
I also remember liking She's A Star when that came out, but I thought it was a Suede song.

It was destiny calling for me. When trying to explain the nature of the music industry to us my teacher just put destiny calling on and left us to it. I'd heard the song loads before, but I'd never really listened to it. When I got home I was rooting around my mum's CD rack and The Best of fell out. I decided it was fate and I've been hooked ever since.

What a cool teacher you had! Mine (when they actually stuck music on in lessons during HS and College) played trash and nothing much else!

Come Home was also the first song I heard and got into. Was also my first James T-shirt. White long sleeve.
